It had been supposed to rain all day, but we got lucky and it stayed dry all day. Went down with a friend to Palo Alto yesterday to do a little architecture walk and check out the Stanford Campus. I am going to spend tonight in a very low key manner – Breaking Bad marathon (got the whole set for Christmas, yay!) and a glass of wine! I hope you have a wonderful New Year's! I haven't finalized my goals for 2014, but I'm going to try to keep it simple like I did for this year, to make things more achievable. I'm still thinking about this year – what I accomplished, what I experienced, and what I can improve upon for 2014. Speaking of which, I am still astonished how quickly this year went by. It was a great little outing for the last weekend of 2013.

The Saratoga Federated Church is across the street from the clubhouse. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. To my pleasant surprise, we came across two Julia Morgan buildings, one of my favorite architects. This is the childhood home of Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine. It's on the Main Street of downtown and is sometimes used as retail space, but looked empty. Grover House, a pioneer cottage from 1895. Apparently it used to be a toll road to a sawmill. Their downtown was much smaller and quieter, with most of the shops and restaurants closed. This intriguing house is covered with cobblestones. It's on the main street in downtown, and is the last of the mansions from when it was a residential street. This beautiful Victorian mansion is from 1891 and is now a restaurant. It was damaged in the Loma Prieta quake, but repaired. It was bustling with a farmer's market, shoppers, and people going out to eat. Los Gatos had some really cute Victorian houses and a nice downtown. Both cities are popular places to live in the Silicon Valley area. It was my first visit to both places, which are about an hour south of San Francisco. On Sunday, I took a little day trip down to Los Gatos and Saratoga. They have proper tours the first Sunday of each month, and I want to go back to see more of it. But, it was sort of sad to see it so empty. This cell phone picture definitely doesn’t do it justice. We didn’t wander around too much because we didn’t want to disturb anyone. They were having a service while we were there, but were kind enough to let us in to take a quick look. It’s been designated a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. We also went over to what is considered Bernard Maybeck’s masterpiece, the First Church of Christ, Scientist. I don’t love all of the wires coming out of this house, but the upper window is interesting The other side- I love that roof and the deck This is the only Bernard Maybeck house on Derby The first set of photos were all taken on Derby Street, and there were even more on just that street alone (11 total)! Both architects designed many houses in Berkeley. We went over to Berkeley to go to a restaurant I’ve been wanting to try and while we were there, we checked out some Morgan and Maybeck houses in the area. Morgan is famous for Hearst Castle and Maybeck is famous for the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. My friend and I both love Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck buildings, two local architects whose work basically spans the late 1880s to the 1930s.
